The Department of Telecommunications has issued orders to seven mobile operators to stop transmission from eleven stations in Mumbai. This was after a random survey conducted by DoT revealed that these operators were violating the new radiation norms introduced from 1st September. A high level delegation of DoT officers met with the officials of all licensed operators in Mumbai today and told them about the violations.
Instructions were issued to officials from Reliance Communications, TTML, Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular, Aircel and Loop Telecom to immediately stop radiating from these stations. DoT has said that radiation can be resumed only after the sites are made compliant with the new norms. It has further advised operators to make all the towers compliant with the new norms failing which penal action as per relevant provisions would be taken against delinquent operators.
In view of public health, DoT had earlier issued orders that from 1st September, radiation emitted by telecom towers should be limited to 1/10th of the existing level.
