The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has decided to modify service rules for grant of childcare leave. It has sought comments from various ministries in this regard. All central government departments have been asked to send their comments on the proposed policy by 27th of January. Woman employees in government will not be refused child care leave for at least five days unless there are grave and extraordinarily compelling circumstances that warrant refusal, according to this modification.

As per the existing rules, women employees with minor children may be granted child care leave for a maximum period of two years during their entire service. However, Child care leave is not admissible if the child is eighteen years or older.
