Door open for discussions on India's NSG bid: China

China, which has been opposing India's NSG membership bid, today for the first time said the door is open for discussions on the issue. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying told a media briefing in Beijing that while discussions are going on among the NSG members, Beijing never said it is against any country. She however reiterated that the admission of new members is not listed in the current plenary meeting beginning today in Seoul.

Meanwhile the United States last night asked the members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) to consider and support India's application to join the group during the plenary meeting. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters at his daily news conference that participating governments will need to reach a consensus and the United States will certainly be advocating for India's membership. Earnest said that United States strongly supports India's application to join the Nuclear Suppliers Group. At a separate news conference, State Department Spokesman John Kirby said that the US continue to call on the NSG member countries to support India's application at the plenary session.
