Domestic tourism in the country has grown by 103 million, registering an increase of 13.8 per cent during the last year. An official release says, the number of domestic tourist visits to the states and union territories during 2011 was 851 million as compared to 748 million, the previous year. The top ten states in terms of number of domestic tourist visits in millions, during 2011, include Uttar Pradesh with 155.4 million, Andhra Pradesh 153.1 million and Tamil Nadu 137.5 million. The contribution of the states was about 85.3 per cent to the total number of visits.
AIR correspondent reports, during the same year, the number of foreign tourist visits to the states and union territories was 19.5 million as compared to 17.9 million in 2010. The top ten states in terms of number of foreign tourist visits in millions during 2011 include Maharashtra with 4.8 million, Tamil Nadu, 3.4 million and Delhi, 2.2 million.
