Domestic share markets today closed with strong gains of more than one and a half percent. The Sensex, the index of the top 30 companies on the Bombay Stock Exchange, ended above the 59,800 mark.
The Nifty, which is the index of the top 50 companies on the National Stock Exchange, settled near the 17,600 level. Both stocks rose amid positive cues from global share markets.
The Sensex surged 900 points, or 1.53 percent, to end at 59,809. The Nifty also added 272 points, or 1.57 percent, to close at 17,594.
In the broader market at the BSE, the Mid-Cap index rose 0.58 percent and the Small-Cap index added 0.68 percent.
In the Sensex pack, 26 companies posted gains while the remaining four witnessed losses. SBI Bank was the top gainer, rising 5.1 percent, followed by Bharti Airtel adding 3.3 percent. Reliance surged two and half a per cent and ITC ended 2.4 percent up.
On the other hand, Tech Mahindra slipped 2.2 percent and UltraTech Cement lost one percent.
In sectoral indices at BSE, all 20 sectors posted gains. Services sector gained 3.1 percent, Utilities and Financial Services both, rose 1.8 percent each. Commodities index added 1.7 percent.
The overall breadth of the BSE trade was positive as shares of 2,182 companies gained while 1,333 companies fell. Shares of 124 companies remained unchanged.
