In Tamilnadu, the ruling DMK went on a protest against the arrest of over 100 Indian fishermen by the Srilankan Navy in front of Ports throughout the State today. In a statement released at Chennai, the DMK said, more than 5000 workers alongwith fishermen courted arrest while trying to take a protest march demanding the release of the fishermen who were apprehended yesterday. DMK members of Parliament Ms.Kanimozhi and Mr.T.K.S.Elangovan were arrested in Chennai while Mr.A.K.S.Vijayan was arrested in Nagapattinam. Similar protests took place in Cuddalore, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and other parts of the State. Meanwhile more than one lakh fishermen from Nagapattinam did not go for fishing today as a mark of protest demanding the release of their fellow fishermen.AIR Colombo correspondent reports, Indian High Commission in Colombo is already in touch with the Sri Lankan authorities to secure their early release . The newly opened Indian Consular General office in Jaffna is also in touch with the Indian fishermen and working on their early release.However, in response to a question on the arrest of Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu by the Srilankan navy, Dr.Singh said that the issue has been taken up with Colombo. He elaborated that Foreign Secretary Ms.Nirupama Rao was sent to Srilanka recently to register India's strongest protest on the treatment meted out to the fishermen by their Navy.
