A CBI court in Chennai today sentenced DMK Rajya Sabha MP T M Selvaganapathy and four others to two years rigorous imprisonment in connection with construction of cremation sheds in Nagapattinam district during 1995-96.
Special CBI Judge S Malathi said there was strong evidence of the corruption in the Cremation shed scam and slapped a fine of 25,000 rupees on Selvaganapathy.
CBI sources said during 1995-96 under Jawahar Rojgar Yojana Scheme, Selvaganapathy had ordered to construct 100 cremation sheds for Adi Dravidars in Nagapattinam.
Instead of awarding the contract to cooperative societies, it was entrusted to a private company and funds were also sanctioned.
The PWD officials who inspected the shed found that it was not properly constructed following which the case was taken up by CBI.
Alongwith him the special commissioner Acharyalu and the Project Director Sathyamurthy were also awarded imprisonment.
Selvaganapathy was the Local Administration and Rural Development Minister of Tamil Nadu during the period of AIADMK government. Later he joined the DMK party. He is serving as Rajya Sabha member since 2010.
