The Congress and the DMK have reached a seat sharing agreement for assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, ending the three-day long political stalemate. Congress General Secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters in New Delhi last evening that the leadership of the two parties has finally decided the number of seats and Congress will contest 63 seats. DMK and the Congress leadership has finally decided the number of seats, among ourselves. The Congress will be contesting on 63 seats and now we have unanimously come to the conclusion that after contesting on 63 seats, the alliance will work together and the alliance will compend together and will ensure the alliance is back to power like on earlier occasion. The deal was announced after DMK Minister Dayanidhi Maran held two rounds of talks with Senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee. Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and Political Secretary to Congress President Ahmad Patel were also present in the meeting. AIR correspondent reports that political uncertainty at the Centre has come to an end after the deal has been struck. Making a simultaneous announcement about the agreement in Chennai, Mr Karunanidhi said, he has taken away one seat each from his party, the PMK and the IUML to concede to Congress' demand for 63 seats. This is the second highest number of seats Congress will be contesting in alliance with DMK after 1980, when both parties shared 112 seats each under an electoral pact then.
