In Tamil Nadu, thousands of DMK cadres were arrested and later released today. They were arrested while trying to protest against the AIADMK government for allegedly indicting DMK members in false cases. The DMK had called for a state wide demonstration against the cause. In connection with this, demonstrations were held in all the district headquarters. In Chennai, former Deputy Chief Minister and DMK party treasurer M K Stalin and other former Ministers including DMK MP, T K S Elangovan were arrested along with hundreds of party workers. Reports from districts say that all those who had demonstrated, were arrested. The DMK treasurer alleged political vendetta on part of the AIADMK government for land-grab cases filed against his party men. The DMK Chief and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has already condemned the arrest of his partymen on this charge. The state government on the other hand, after ordering a crackdown on land grabbing, has been bringing many former Ministers and DMK party functionaries under this charge. A separate Cell has been created by the state government to look into the matter relating to land grabbing. The Chief Minister Ms. Jayalalitha has denied that it was an act of political Vedanta. She said, the arrests have been made on the complaints by common people who do not have any political backing.
