Diwali being celebrated with traditional fervor & zeal across India

The festival of lights Diwali is being celebrated with enthusiasm and gaiety across the country today. The day marks the triumph of good over evil. People on this day perform puja of Goddess of Wealth Lakshmi and seek her blessings. They light up their homes with diyas and lanterns, exchange gifts and sweets amongst their loved ones and burst crackers in the evening.

The President, theVice President, Prime Minister and UPA Chairperson have greeted the nation on the joyous occasion. In his message, President Pranab Mukherjee exhorted the countrymen to dedicate themselves towards spreading the message of compassion, love, brotherhood and peace.

Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, in his message, said the festival is an appropriate time for people to resolve to follow the high ideals in life.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in his message, said it is an occasion for strengthening the bonds of love and brotherhood in the society. He said, may this Deepawali usher in hope, joy and prosperity to all.

Making a strong appeal for communal harmony, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi wished the festival renews and strengthens the bonds of family, community and friendship.

In Delhi, police has beefed up the security arrangements to deal with any untoward incidents. Extra personnel have been deployed at all parts of the city. Shoppers thronging various market places have to undergo elaborate checks. Besides market places, vital and strategically important installations are also under security cover.

The Fire department has stationed more fire tenders at different points. The Delhi Traffic Police in coordination with the local police issued more challans to auto-rickshaw drivers for refusal and overcharging. All the Hospitals in City have been directed to reserve extra beds for burn victims and also put additional paramedical staff on duty.
