India's hopes of increasing their medals tally at the London Olympics were shattered on Friday, as grapplers Amit Kumar Dahiya and Narsingh Pancham Yadav crashed out of the wrestling competition. At the Excel Arena, Amit defeated his Iranian rival Rahimi Hassan Sabzali 3-1 to enter the quarterfinals. But, he lost the next two bouts, including a repechage, to make his exit from the freestyle 55 kg weight category.
In the freestyle 74-kg category, Narsingh was outclassed by his much superior Canadian rival Matthew Judah Gentry and lost his opener 1-3. He then made his exit when the Canadian lost in the next round.
Now, only Beijing Games bronze medallist Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt are remaining in the fray on the mat.
Yogeshwar Dutt will compete in the 60-kg category today while Sushil Kumar will be seen in action in 66-kg division on Sunday.
Today, the Indian men's hockey team will battle a last place finish in the Olympics when they meet South Africa in the play off match to decide the 11th and 12 places. The final between the Netherlands and Germany will also be played today.
In the athletic events, only two more Indian competitors remain in contention. They are Basanta Bahadur Rana in men's 50-km walk and marathon runner Ram Singh Yadav.
