The Lok Sabha has taken up the discussion on the Supplementary Demands for Grants 2010-11 amounting to 54 thousand crore rupees. Initiating a discussion, Senior BJP leader and former Finance Minister, Mr. Yashwant Sinha, charged the government with failure to manage the country's economy. He disputed the conviction of the Finance Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee that inflation will grow along with GDP growth and gave statistics in this regard for the last nine years.Mr. Sinha said the country faced high inflationary trend during the last two years because of hike in the prices of food items. The BJP leader also made a strong plea that Members of Parliament should have an effective role in the planning and implementation of the schemes at district level.Countering the allegations, Mr. K.S. Rao of the Congress charged the opposition with not coming out with constructive criticism of the government. Alleging that the NDA government gave top priority to huge investments in the trade and industry sectors neglecting of rural poor, Mr. Rao said most of the investments by the UPA Government are aimed at benefiting the common man. He also gave details about the investments by his government in education, rural development, agricultural and healthcare sectors. Mr. Rao underlined the need for further amendment of the Essential Commodities Act to take stringent action against the hoarders and blackmarketeers.
