Discussion continues in LS on Constitution day; Members recall Dr B R Ambedkar's contributions

In its post-lunch session, the Lok Sabha resumed discussion on commitment to India's Constitution as part of 125th birth anniversary celebration of Dr B R Ambedkar. Participating in the debate, Trinamool Congress leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay highlighted the role of Dr Ambedkar in the uplift of the deprived and poor. He said, it was Dr Ambedkar who had advocated the abolition of untouchability.<br/><br/>He said, it will be a befitting tribute to him if untouchability is removed altogether. BJD leader Tathagata Satpathy stressed the need for giving equal importance in promoting all languages in the country. Shiv Sena leader Anand Rao Adsul said that NDA government has given Dr Ambedkar the respect he deserved long ago by acquiring his residence in London and giving it the status of a memorial.<br/><br/>TDP leader K Ram Mohan Naidu advocated compulsory voting and effectively empowering the women. TRS leader Jitender Reddy said, the Telangana government is working for the welfare of the downtrodden. This has been confirmed in the recent by-election in Warangal which elected his party's Scheduled Caste nominee by an overwhelming margin.<br/><br/>CPI(M) leader Jitendra Choudhary demanded proportional representation for the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Castes in government services. LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan lauded the government's effort to honour Dr B R Ambedkar. The discussion is continuing. <br/><br/>Participating in the discussion, NCP leader Tariq Anwar said that time has come for the government to introspect why writers, artists and film makers are returning their awards. RJD's Jai Prakash Narayan Yadav demanded the release of caste-census data. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge demanded reservation in promotion for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. He also opposed any change in the Labour Laws to favour the corporate sector. Mr Kharge said that intolerance is the biggest threat to the society and the government should address the issue. <br/><br/>BJP leader and Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawar Chand Gehlot said the Narendra Modi- led govermnet is implementing various schemes for the benefit of SCs, STs , disabled and transgenders. He rejected the Congress allegation of reducing the fund allocation in the sub- plan for SCs and STs adding that more funds have been allocated for them as compared to the Congress- led UPA government. He said it is everyone's duty to follow the Constitution in letter and spirit.
