Discharge of disqualified Maoist combatants concludes in Nepal

In Nepal, the process of discharge of the disqualified Maoist combatants that began a month ago concludedon Monday afternoon with the last group of 268 combatants leaving the UN monitored cantonment at Dahaban in Rolpa district. Out of the total 452 former soldiers, including minors rendered disqualified during the UN verification process in this cantonment, 184 have already left the cantonment before the discharge process. Unified CPN (Maoist) Chairman, Chief of UN Mission in Nepal Karin Landgren and representatives from UNMIN, UNDP and British Envoy Andrew Hall and the Nepal government representative were present in the final discharge ceremony on Monday.<br/>AIR correspondent said the discharge of the disqualified combatants had started on 7th January at Dudhauli in Sindhuli district with the release of first lot of 201 combatants. The government and the United Nations have offered discharged former Maoist combatants a rehabilitation package that includes vocational training and formal education they can choose within a year of their discharge. The discharge of last group of Maoist combatants today was a part of an Action Plan signed last month by the UN, the Nepalese Government and Unified CPN (Maoist). Government sources say that out of a total 4008 disqualified Maoist combatants, only 2394 took part in the actual discharge process.
