Differences among political parties over Women's Reservation Bill

Political parties appear to be divided on the issue of Women's Reservation Bill which is scheduled to come up in the Rajya Sabha on International Women's Day on Monday. Ruling Congress, and the two main Opposition groups BJP and the Left are keen to pass the bill in the present form, the Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janta Dal, Janta Dal United are opposing the bill in the present form. Congress President Mrs Sonia Gandhi, while addressing the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting called the Women's Reservation Bill as one of the most important legislations and called for its early passage. Supporting the Bill in its present form, Law Minister MR Veerappa Moily said that any reservation for backward and scheduled classes within the Bill can be introduced only if a similar reservation is brought in general. He also ruled out the charge of the Bill being an attempt to divide the Opposition which was united on price rise issue. The main Opposition, BJP, says it will support the bill in its present form when it comes in the Parliament. Party Leader Venkaiyah Naidu told reporters today that it is for the government to bring about a consensus among political parties. <br/><br/>Opposing the Women's Reservation Bill in its present form, RJD Chief Mr Lalu Prasad Yadav demanded quota for scheduled and backward classes in the bill. He also alleged that bringing the bill in the present form is a move to divide the opposition when the government has been cornered on the price rise issue. Samajwadi party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said they will not allow the passage of the Bill. Speaking on the same lines, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav said that the party will not allow the passage of the Bill. The Shiv Sena however said that the party is in favor of deciding the reserved seats themselves and not by election commission. <br/><br/>Chairperson of Women's Commission Ms Girija Vyas described the move as an important step toward inclusion of women in decision making process. <br/><br/>Supporting the Bill, CPM leader Gurudas Dasgupta said that the party's stand on the bill remains the same. A delegation of Women Congress MPs from both Houses have thanked Congress President Mrs Sonia Gandhi for the decision to take the Women Reservation Bill for discussion on 8th of this month. The delegation, lead by Chairperson of Committee for Empowerment of Women Ms Chandresh Kumari, met Mrs Sonia Gandhi in Parliament House today to convey their feelings for taking this major step. The bill provides 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies<br/>
