Diabetes reaches epidemic proportions in China

Diabetes afflicts 92.4 million adults in China. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the general adult population in China. Overall, 92.4 million adults 20 years of age or older have diabetes, and in 60.7 per cent of these cases, the diabetes are undiagnosed. <br/><br/>According to the study the prevalence of diabetes was higher among urban residents at 11.4 per cent than among rural residents at 8.2 per cent. The results indicate that diabetes has become a major public health challenge in China and underscores the need for national strategies aimed at the prevention, detection and treatment. <br/><br/>Earlier surveys calculated 43.2 million diabetics in the country, fewer than the 50.8 million estimated in India by the Brussels-based International Diabetes Federation.<br/>
