Mumbai Police Commissioner, Arup Patnaik today said that the veteran journalist Jyotirmoy Dey’s murder was not an act of personal enmity. He added that initial investigations suggest that the killing was carried out by professional hit men. Mr. Patnaik also cleared the name of ACP Anil Mahabole, saying that he was out of the picture in this case. Meanwhile, amidst growing demand for a CBI probe into the case, Maharashtra’s chief Minister, Prithviraj Chavan today said that Mumbai police should not be undermined and given a fair chance to investigate the murder. In a related development, Assistant Police Commissioner Anil Mahabole, today said that he has high regards for Dey and would appear before the Crime Branch if summoned. He also denied media reports linking him with the underworld. He added that he was being falsely implicated in the case and all the allegations against him were absurd. 56 year old Dey, had extensively covered underworld and crime for over two decades and worked for Mumbai tabloid Mid Day. He was shot dead on Saturday by four unidentified bike-borne persons in suburban Powai.
