Developed countries should take major responsibility for greenhouse gas emissions says Jairam

India and China have asserted that measures to combat climate change need to factor in the principle of equitable access to development opportunities. Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said developing countries have to strike a balance between growth objectives and emission mitigation as experts reminded that developed nations have over-used their fair share. He was speaking at an event hosted by India on the sidelines of climate talks in Cancun. Mr Ramesh pointed out that academic work on equitable access was not being factored into negotiations.China has also maintained that developed countries should take major responsibility for climate change and shoulder due obligations as the unrestrained emission during their 200-year industrialisation process is largely to blame for the global warming.Mr Ramesh said, Kyoto Protocol is the make or break issue for UN climate talks at Cancun. He said, not only Japan but many other countries are opposed to continuation of the treaty that legally binds industrialised nations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.Mr Ramesh also warned participating nations that the inability to establish a mechanism for disbursing 30 billion US Dollars to countries most vulnerable to climate change will be a big failure of the present conference.
