Deployment of Army at toll plazas in West Bengal not political: Subhash Bhamre

The government made it clear that there was no political motive behind deployment of Army at toll plazas in West Bengal yesterday and it was a part of routine annual exercise being carried in several states since last month. Minister of State for Defence, Dr Subhash Ramrao Bhamre told the Rajya Sabha today in response to Opposition's allegation that the West Bengal government was not informed in advance about Army deployment.<br/><br/>Refuting the charges, the Minister asserted that the Army exercise was conducted in coordination with local police authorities. Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu appealed to the Opposition not to drag Army into controversy and politicise the issue.<br/><br/>Earlier, raising the issue, Leader of Opposition Gulam Nabi Azad alleged that the West Bengal state police had no information about Army exercise and sought a clarification on the issue. Sukhendu Sekhar Roy of Trinamool Congress claimed that Army has taken over in all the 19 toll plazas in the state overnight.
