‘ Dense fog, cold continue to disrupt normal life in North India; Over 100 die in UP

Dense fog and cold wave in North India continued to disrupt rail, road and air traffic for the third consecutive day on Monday.<br/> <br/>However, light rain in the National Capital and its surrounding areas gave some respite to the people from the foggy weather.<br/> <br/>In Jammu and Kashmir, Leh City and adjoining areas and higher reaches in Ladakh region experienced the fourth major snowfall of the winter season last night. The snowfall continued till Monday morning. <br/> <br/>The minimum temperature of (-)15.6 degree Celsius at Leh and (-) 16.8 degree Celsius at Kargil was recorded on Monday. <br/> <br/>Traffic on Srinagar -Jammu National Highway continued to remain suspended following fresh snowfall. <br/> <br/>AIR correspondent reports that there has been more snow in the higher reaches but there was no rain or snow in Srinagar. <br/> <br/>In Uttar Pradesh spine chilling cold conditions with dense fog continued to prevail in most parts of the state bringing rail, air and road services to a screeching halt. Educational institutions have been closed till 7th of this month. <br/> <br/>Maximum temperature was recorded 2 to 10 degree celsius below normal at most of the places with Shahjahanpur recording the lowest temperature in the state at 2.8 degrees celsius. Heavy fog also disrupted train services at a number of places. <br/> <br/>Meanwhile death toll due to cold rose to more than 100 with fresh casualties reported from Siddharthnagar, Mirzapur among other districts of the state. <br/> <br/>Orissa also shivered under unrelenting cold wave condition with mercury dipping to a record low. Places like Phulbani recorded 4 degree Celsius, while hilly Tensa in Sundargarh district, Joda, Kiriburu and Kanjipani in Keonjhar district and Daringbadi recording near-zero temperature. <br/> <br/>The weather office has predicted that the chilly conditions will prevail for the next two days.<br/>
