Demonstration held in Moscow to commemorate those killed in 1993

Hundreds of communists and opposition activists have marched through Moscow to commemorate those killed when then-President Boris Yeltsin sent troops to crush a rebellious parliament 16 years ago. The demonstrators carried red flags and portraits of the more than 100 people killed in the street clashes of Oct 3 and 4, 1993. Sunday march ended behind the building known as the White House, then Russia's parliament building, which was blasted with tank fire as troops moved in to arrest the leaders of the resistance. They had defied Yeltsin's order to dissolve parliament and called for his impeachment. The demonstrators included members of the Nationalist Bolshevik Party, among the most vocal opponents of the current Russian leadership.
