Congress' attempt to unite opposition parties against the demonetisation has suffered a severe jolt with Left, JD(U) and NCP expressed their inability to attend the meet called by the main opposition party in New Delhi tomorrow. CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said, there were no consultations and things were not planned properly for the joint meeting. He, however, said there is no dispute among the opposition parties on demonetization and its impact on people.

Sources in JD(U) and NCP also cited improper co-ordination as reasons for not participating in the meeting. JD(U) leader K C Tyagi said, no common minimum pogramme has been worked out for it adding all opposition parties do not have the same stand on banning 500 and 1,000 rupee notes.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh downplayed the plans of some parties skipping the meeting. He cited local and regional compulsions of these parties for not coming on the same platform.

The meeting will be followed by a joint press conference by Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi along with other opposition leaders. Congress President Sonia Gandhi is also expected to join it. TMC President and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached New Delhi this evening to take part in the meeting. DMK, RJD and others are scheduled to participate in it.

Earlier, on the eve of deliberations, Rahul Gandhi held a meeting with party General Secretaries and State Congress Presidents at his residence to discuss the situation arising out of note ban.
