Democrats made gains in State elections in U.S.

In the United States, Democrats have made gains in state elections. Democrat Andy Beshear claimed victory in Kentucky's governor vote, after a tight race in the conservative-leaning state. <br />'' <br />'' Democratic Attorney General Andy Beshear, whose father, Steve, was the State's last Democratic governor, scored a narrow victory over Governor Matt Bevin despite an election-eve rally headlined by President Donald Trump.<br />'' <br />'' Democrats also seized full control of the legislature in Virginia for the first time in over 20 years. However, Republicans held on to power in the Mississippi governor vote, following a closely-fought race in the traditional Republican stronghold. <br />'' <br />'' Republican Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves defeated Attorney General Jim Hood, a moderate Democrat who favours gun rights and opposes abortion rights. <br />'' <br />'' The outcomes of yesterday's elections in four states — Kentucky, Virginia, Mississippi and New Jersey, could offer clues to how next year's presidential election could unfold when Donald Trump will aim for a second four-year term.<br />''
