Deliberations at International Conference on Biodiversity gains momentum

The deliberations at the ongoing International Conference on Biodiversity in Hyderabad have gathered momentum following the high level segment began negotiations this morning. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has inaugurated the high level segment last evening. Environment ministers and Secretaries from about 70 countries are taking part in the high level segment. They are deliberating upon the conference papers which were prepared after discussions in the working groups last week over a number of biodiversity conservation issues. The negotiations between developed and developing countries over the key issues like fund mobilization and budget allocations are still continuing as they could not arrive at consensus. UN spokesperson David Ainsworth told reporters this morning that the working Groups are relooking the amended drafts after some member countries raised concerns over certain issues pertaining to climate change and Geo-engineering. The deliberations are likely to continue till late evening.
