Delhi has earned a special recognition of having the highest monthly per capita expenditure, MPCE and the highest per capita income in the country. The per capita income of Delhi during the year 2009-10 was 1,16,886 rupees which is the highest among all states and Union Territories. This was revealed in a report titled ' Level and Pattern of households Consumer Expenditure in Delhi which was released by Delhi Chief Minister Mrs Sheila Dikshit.The report said that the monthly per capita expenditure of Delhiites living in urban areas has increased from 2,078 rupees in 2008 to 2,905 rupees in 2010 which is also highest in the country. While the national figure for MPCE in urban areas is 1,984 rupees for 2010. The report is based on findings of a sample survey conducted during July 2009 to June 2010 under National Sample Survey of 66th Round.The report also said that around 90 per cent of the total households are using LPG as their source of cooking, whereas only 4.81 per cent households are dependent on kerosene and 1.62 per cent on firewood.Around 64 per cent households have their own dwelling units and 31 per cent have rented accommodation. On education front, the report said that over 90 per cent population in the city is literate out of which around 16 per cent are literate upto primary level 27 percent upto middle and secondary, 13 per cent upto higher secondary level and 20 per cent upto graduate and post graduate level.
