Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board establishes 84 temporary night shelters

With winter setting in and the nights getting colder and longer Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board has set up 84 temporary night shelters besides 64 permanent night shelters already running in the city with the capacity of 9085. Temporary shelters are mainly near Railways Stations, Bus Terminals and Building sites. Talking to AIR, Chief Executive Officer of Board, Mr. Amar Nath said that there are no specific night shelters made by them for children. He said that various Non-Governmental Organisations are taking care of homeless children. The board is providing some financial assistance to these NGOs. Taking sue moto cognizance of reports recently that night shelters have been razed in the city in the midst of winter, the Supreme Court restrained the Delhi government from demolishing any such shelter, temporary or permanent, in the capital. On Wednesday, National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has also issued notice to the Chief Secretary, Delhi Government to submit a report in this matter.
