The deadlock between the Delhi University and University Grants Commission seems to be over with the University deciding to scrap the four-year programme. The decision was taken at a meeting of principals of colleges affiliated to the University.

The university is reported to have conveyed to the UGC that it will start the admission process under the three-year programme.The University is also expected to issue a directive to colleges later today to begin the admission process from tomorrow.

It had received another letter from UGC last night for compliance with the UGC order to scrap the four-year course. The UGC had rejected DU's proposal formulated by eminent citizens and academicians.

Earlier Human Resources Development Minister Smriti Irani has said students' interests are paramount and should not be sacrificed at the altar of prestige.

She was responding to a media query on the stand-off between the UGC and Delhi University over the controversial four-year undergraduate course. She pointed out that the government respects autonomy of institutions but autonomy is meant for serving the people.

The Minister called for resolving the deadlock in the interest of the student community and the premiere university.
