About 64 percent polling has been reported for seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi today. It may go up as voting continued beyond 6 PM in some areas across the city. Polling which began on a slow note picked up after the first two hours and it is progressing steadily. 150 candidates including 58 independents are in the fray. Nearly 50,000 security personnel, apart from 161 flying squads of police and video surveillance teams have been deployed as part of arrangements to ensure fair and peaceful polls.
AIR correspondent says, there have been complaints of inconvenience caused to voters with Election Commission's directive not allowing mobile phones inside polling booths. No provision has been made either for keeping cell phones in safe custody outside the booths.
In Haryana, polling was heavy with 69.5 per cent of voting reported for its 10 Lok Sabha seats,when voting ended at 6 p.m. today. It is expected to cross 70 percent as still voters were waiting in the queues in about 14 assembly segments.
Faridabad recorded 59.4 percent and Bhiwani – Mahendergarh Lok sabha constituency 68.3 per cent. Maximum voting was recorded in Sirsa, Kurukshetra, Hisar, and Ambala lok sabha constituencies and minimum in Faridabad lok sabha constituency.
Barring few incidents polling went on peacefully. In Uttar Pradesh, about 65 percent polling has been recorded in first phase of voting in 10 constituencies. These are Saharanpur, Kairana, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnore, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagger, Bulandshahr and Aligarh.
Quoting the Election Commission sources AIR correspondent reports that maximum 73.43 percent polling has been recorded at Saharanpur seat followed by 69.40 percent in Kairana constituency, 68.27 percent in Muzaffarnagar and 66.06 percent in Bijnore. Minimum of 57.10 percent voting has been recorded at Bulandshahr constituency seat. Aligarh has polled 61.60 percent , Gautam Buddha Nagger 62.67, Ghaziabad 60 percent and Meerut 63.80 percent voting. In Baghpat, where from where RLD leader Ajit Singh is in contest has polled 67.20 percent votes.
AIR correspondent reports that polling continued at several polling stations even after 6 PM as electorates were waiting to vote.
In Madhya Pradesh, more than 59 per cent polling was reported in the nine parliamentary segments in Vindhya and Mahakaushal regions. Rewa, Stana, Shahdol, Sidhi, Balaghat, Mandla, Chindwara, Jabalpur and Hoshangabad parliamentary segment went to poll under first phase of Lok Sabha elections today. AIR correspondent reports that the poll per cent is likely to increase as the voters who reached polling booths till 6 pm were allowed to exercise their franchise.
