Delhi Lt. Governor may invite BJP to form government in Delhi

BJP may be invited by Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung to form government in Delhi, which is currently under President rule. Jung has sought permission from President Pranab Mukherjee to invite the single largest party, which is BJP, to stake claim to power in the city. In his report to the President, the Lieutenant Governor gave a detailed analysis of the political situation in the national capital and underlined the need to have an elected government.

Delhi BJP Chief Satish Upadhyay said, the party would examine the possibility to form the government if invited. Aam Aadmi Party and Congress have, however, opposed the move. In a series of tweets, Aam Aadmi Party Convenor Arvind Kejriwal has started a campaign against what he calls, government by chor darwaza. Talking to reporters, Delhi Congress Spokesperson Mukesh Sharma said, BJP should not be allowed to take power through backdoor and fresh polls should be held in the city.

Delhi was put under President's rule following resignation of the Aam Aadmi Party government in February, barely two months after elections had thrown a hung Assembly. BJP had won 31 seats in the 70-member Assembly but its number came down to 28 as three party legislators resigned from the Assembly after they were elected to Lok Sabha. BJP, along with its ally Akali Dal's one MLA, has now 29 MLAs in the Assembly and it will require support of five more legislators to prove majority in the House. Aam Aadmi Party had won 28 seats and formed the government with outside support from Congress' eight MLAs. However, its tally was reduced to 27 after it expelled rebel MLA Vinod Kumar Binny from the party, for indiscipline.
