Efforts are on to install government in Delhi which is under President rule with Assembly under suspended animation. President Pranab Mukherjee has already okayed Lieutanant Governor Najeeb Jung's proposal to invite BJP to form the government in the city. A press release from the Lieutanant Governor's Office today said Mr Jung will explore the possibilities of government formation with leaders of all political parties over the next few days. Mr Jung also discussed the issue with Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
The meeting came a day after Supreme Court criticized both the Central government and the Lieutanant Governor for delaying a decision to form government in the National Capital.
The BJP has been maintaining that it will take a decision on government formation in Delhi after getting an invite from the Lieutanant Governor. Currently, BJP, along with ally Akali Dal's lone MLA, has 29 legislators and will require the support of five more MLAs to prove majority in the 70-member Assembly. Its effective strength is 67 with three seats going for by-elections on 25th of next month.
Senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu has said that the party will not indulge in horse trading and is ready for fresh polls. Political observers say that there are divergent views within the party on government formation. Aam Aadmi Party and Congress are demanding immediate dissolution of the Delhi Assembly to pave the way for fresh polls.
