Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar has directed Delhi Government to take control of the maintenance of the Commonwealth Games village complex which will house the athletes. The Organising Committee of the Games will be the overall incharge of the Games Village but Delhi government will look after the issues of maintenance and cleanliness from today. The Games village will be formally declared open today. Commonwealth Games Federation President Mike Fennel will arrive in New today. Meanwhile, Commonwealth Games venues and Athletes Village have come under a complete lockdown from midnight last night. Only those carrying valid passes will have access to these areas now. A large number of armed policemen, including paramilitary personnel, have been deployed across the stadia and village. Sophisticated gadgets have also been installed at the stadia.External Affairs Minister S M Krishna sought to reassure the world that India is determined to make the event a success, and that security will not be a worrying issue. Mr Krishna, who is in New York to attend the UN General Assembly session, asserted that athletes and participants arriving in New Delhi will be protected and have no reason to worry.In a unique move, every apartment at the Games Village has been connected through optical fibres for making available high-speed broadband connection to its residents. This will enable telecom service providers to deliver a host of high bandwidth applications to residents, including IPTV, content on demand and networking solutions. The government has also launched the System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research to monitor, forecast and showcase the air quality and weather information at various locations in Delhi including the Games venue. Launching the system Ministry of Earth Sciences Secretary Dr Shailesh Nayak said that big screens will be set up in all stadiums to give venue specific weather and air quality status and forecast. 35 Automatic Weather Stations including 11 Air quality monitoring stations have been set up in Delhi and NCR. It is first of its kind system to provide 24 hour advance forecast for major air pollutants.
