The green cover in the national capital is to be increased by 33 per cent. Delhi Government has decided to plant ten lakh saplings during this monsoon season to achieve this. As part of this effort, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday launched a mass plantation drive and planted saplings in an area spread over one hectare along the ring road bypass which was commissioned during the Commonwealth Games last year. The survival rate of planted saplings will also be increased by providing them proper care. Dikshit said that the plantation campaign has been meticulously planned and all government offices, Delhi Metro, MCD, NDMC, DDA, DTC and PSUs are being involved in the campaign. The green area during last ten years in the city has been increased from 26 square kilometer to more than 300 square kilometer.
