The Delhi government will implement the islanding facility for power supplies in three months, a move aimed at preventing electricity supply disruptions for essential services in case of grid disturbances. At a joint press meet with Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in the national capital on Wednesday, Union Power Minister Veerappa Moily said that the islanding scheme for Delhi will be in place in three months. The islanding scheme comes against the backdrop of massive Northern Grid failure in July this year that affected power supplies to many states and regions, including Delhi. Once this facility is in place, Delhi would be able to ensure power supplies for essential services even if there are Northern Grid problems. Mrs. Dikshit said the scheme would be operational by January next year, ahead of the schedule whereby the same was to be ready by middle of 2013.Mr. Moily said, the islanding facility for Delhi is being set up at a cost of 25 crore rupees and it would have a capacity of up to 3,400 MW.Already, cities such as Mumbai and Kolkata have islanding schemes. Union Power Secretary P Uma Shankar said that more states have proposed to set up islanding facilities.
