Concerned over incidents of food adulteration, Delhi Government has decided to enforce a stringent law with a view to check alduteration in food articles. The Act provdes for maximum punishment of life imprisonment and a penalty of upto 10 lakh ruppes for those involved in such illegal activities. Delhi Health Minister A K Walia said Food Safety and Standards Act passed by the Parliament in 2006 has strict provisions to regulate food safety standards and the government has decided to enforce the law to ensure proper quality in food articles. Highlighting details of the Act, Dr Walia said, manufacturers of adulterated food may face imprisonment up to seven years with fine of 10 lakh rupees.In case of death caused due to adulterated food items, the maximum punishment will be life term and fine will be up to 10 lakh rupees. He said that under the Act, all traders who deal in food business will have to register themselves with the food department.
