Delhi Government has appointed a Group of Ministers, GoM to examine whether the existing law can be amended to ensure death penalty or life imprisonment to those involved in sexual assault on minors. The decision to constitute the GoM was taken at a special Cabinet meeting convened to discuss the law and order situation in the city in the wake of rape of two minors. <br/><br/>Briefing reporters after the meeting, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, the GoM will submit a concrete proposal for amendment in the Criminal Laws which could be taken up in next session of the State Assembly. The Ministerial panel to be headed by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has been asked to submit the report within 15 days. <br/><br/>GoM will examine and recommend that those committing heinous crimes like rape and murder and are above 15 years of age, they should be treated as adults and not juveniles. The GoM will also recommend to the government to set up special police stations to register and investigate crime against women. The GoM will also examine whether the investigating officer can be held accountable in case of delay in filing charge sheets relating to cases of sexual violence against women. <br/><br/>Mr Kejrwal said, a Commission of Inquiry will also be set up withing a week to examine issues relating to women safety. A list of rape cases pending in various courts in Delhi will be prepared to fast-track them. He said, Delhi government is ready to spend funds to set up new courts and improve existing infrastructure to try such cases.
