Government today constituted a Commission of Enquiry to look into various aspects of the gangrape of the 23 year-old paramedic in a moving bus on December 16th. Retired Juastice Usha Mehra will head the commission.
The commission will suggest the ways to make Delhi safer for women. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi the Finance Minister, Mr. P.Chidambaram said that commission has been asked to submit its report within three months.
The commission of Enquiry will identify lapses on the part of police among other things. Mr. Chidambaram asserted that government will do everything to ensure safety and security of women.
Meanwhile, the health condition of the 23 year old Delhi gang rape victim is stable but continues to be critical. She is still in the ICU on ventilator support at Safdarjung hospital.
Doctors attending on her said, the condition of the victim had deteriorated late last night but improved after some experts were called in.
Her fresh testimony was taken yesterday by the metropolitan magistrate.after controversy erupted over recording of her statement. The statement recorded under section 164 of CrPC before the Metropolitan magistrate will have evidential value.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had requested a probe from the home minister into the alleged police interference.
Delhi Police's Crime Branch will investigate the death of Constable Subhash Tomar during Sunday's violence at India Gate. A journalism student Yogendra, who claimed to be an eye-witness, contradicted police version that Constable Tomar was beaten up by protesters leading to his death, saying he fell down on his own.
Doctors at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital said, the Constable had no major external injury marks when he was brought to the hospital and that he had suffered a heart attack.
Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat has refused to comments on it till the post mortem report is out.
Yesterday, Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar had said that Tomar had suffered internal injuries in his neck, chest and stomach and were waiting for the post mortem report to ascertain the exact cause of his death.
