Delhi gangrape case: All 6 accused arrested; Police to seek life sentence, day to day trial

All six accused in Delhi gang rape case have been nabbed by the police. The Sixth accused was arrested from Aurangabad district in Bihar. Bihar police said that the accused was arrested from his house by the joint team of Bihar and Delhi Police. Earlier, the fifth accused, a helper who was also absconding was apprehended from Uttar Pradesh's Badaun and he has claimed to be a minor. Other four were already nabbed by the police.

Meanwhile Home Secretary RK Singh today said that the police will seek life sentence for the perpetrators of the gang rape incident in Delhi on last Sunday in view of aggravating circumstances of the case. Addressing the media in a joint press conference with Delhi Police Commissioner, he said, the charge sheet in the case will be filed soon and the government will request for day to day trail.

The Home Secretary claimed that police has sufficient evidence for the conviction of the accused. Mr Singh said the police has intensified action against buses with tinted glass and the vehicles found with tinted glasses will be impounded. The staff of buses, autos and taxies will be verified and strict action will be taken to curb drunken driving and other illegal activities. He said, transport department has been asked to issue permits only after police verifies the staff.

Mr Singh said, drivers with license from other states will be put to test before being allowed to ply vehicles in national capital. The transport department has also been directed to put more buses on duty during night to ferry commuters. Mr Singh said, there is no diversion of staff for VIP security from the normal policing duty. Replying to a query, the Home Secretary said, advisories have been issued to other states and Union Territories also to ensure safety of women.

The Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said, the charges amounting to attempt to murder under IPC 307 has been added to charge sheet against the accused in the gang rape case. He said swift action of the Delhi Police helped in getting timely medical attention to the victim. Mr Kumar said, the Delhi Police has cracked the case in record time and also collected important evidence for pressing the charges.
Meanwhile, the condition of the victim continues to be critical even though she has been taken off the ventilator at the Safdarjung hospital in New Delhi. Briefing newsmen on the latest medical update on the health of the victim, doctors attending on her said, early signs of recovery are evident in the periodic evaluation of her health reports.

The doctors also made a public appeal, to avoid protests outside the Safdarjung hospital to prevent inconvenience to patients. Protests continued in various parts of the country over the gang-rape incident. In Delhi a large number of women activists and students protested outside the Rashtrapati Bhavan and Safdarjung Hospital and also at India Gate and Jantar Mantar and demanded speedy and stringent punishment to the rapists. In Uttrakhand people from different walks of life, especially students and women, held protests at various places across the state to express solidarity with the rape victim.
