Delhi gang-rape: Trial starts in fast-track court

The trial of five accused in December 16 Delhi gang-rape case begins in a fast-track court from today. The special court is expected to conduct the trial on a day-to-day basis in the case. The 23-year-old medical student was gang-raped and brutally tortured by six people including a juvenile in a moving bus last year. She died of her injuries in a Singapore hospital on December 29. Six persons, including a 17-year-old boy, was apprehended in connection with the incident, which evoked widespread outrage and anger and triggered protests.
Meanwhile, Supreme Court will hear the petition demanding shifting of the case to some other state. The petition has been filed by the lawyers of the five accused who have said that their clients will not be given fair trial as the particular case faces huge public and media pressure. The Juvenile Justice Board is expected to deliver its verdict on the age of the minor accused on January 28.
