Delhi bound Kalka Express derails; at least 27 killed

In Uttar Pradesh, at least twenty seven passengers have been killed and 150 injured when the Kalka-bound Howrah Kalka Express train derailed this afternoon near Malwan Railway Station in Fatehpur District. Railway spokesman told our Allahabad correspondent that the engine, the pantry van and 15 coaches of the train derailed at around 12.15 p.m. Rescue operations are on to help passengers trapped in the mangled coaches of the derailed train. Senior railway and civil officials have reached the spot to monitor rescue efforts.Two coaches S-1 & S-2 are badly damaged and many passengers are still trapped in these coaches. Rescue teams are trying to cut open the coaches to rescue the passengers.Two relief trains have also arrived at the accident site from Kanpur and Allahabad. Two special trains for the relatives of the affected train passengers from Howrah and New Delhi are also arriving at the accident site. The trains will leave the stations at 7:30 pm in evening from both the stations. A special enquiry counter has been opened at the Howrah station. Besides three help lines have also started functioning at Howrah, Sealdh and Asansol. Up Howrah-Delhi Janata Express and Kolkata – Delhi Lal Quila Express have been cancelled.Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has expressed deep shock and sorrow at the loss of lives caused by the accident.Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi too expressed deep anguish over the loss of lives in the the Delhi-bound Kalka Mail accident near Malwa station. Mrs. Gandhi has urged the authorities to take immediate relief and rescue measures.
