Delhi assembly polls: BJP's CEC to meet today to finalise candidates; Arvinder Singh Lovely will not contest polls

BJP's Central Election Committee (CEC) will meet in New Delhi today to finalise the names of the candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in the national capital. The 15-member panel, chaired by party President Amit Shah, is also expected to announce a campaign committee for the polls. There are reports that Kiran Bedi, the new entrant to the party, may head the campaign panel.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior party leaders, including Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley, are the members of the CEC.

Meanwhile, Congress has asked Delhi unit President Arvinder Singh Lovely not to contest the polls. Party spokesperson Ajay Maken said that the party has requested Mr Lovely to withdraw in the larger interest of the party. He said that the party has asked Mr Lovely to look after organising the party for election campaign at the grass-roots level.

The last date for filing of nominations for the elections is the 21st of this month. Polling will be held on the 7th of next month, with the counting slated for the 10th.
