Defending champion Angelique Kerber beaten by Naomi Osaka in US Open first round

In US Open Tennis, the fourth and final Grand Slam of the season, defending champion Angelique Kerber has made a shocking first round exit. The world number six was stunned by the unseeded Japanese Naomi Osaka, in straight sets, 3-6, 1-6. With this, the Women's Singles section will, this time, have a new champion. Two-time winner Venus Williams, world number one Karolina Pliskova, Angelique Kerber and Maria Sharapova, who made a return after the drug ban, are being seen as the favourites.In Men's Singles, this year's Wimbledon and Australian Open winner Roger Federer averted a major upset as he edged past American Frances Tiafoe, in a five-setter, in the first round. Newly crowned world number one Rafael Nadal, however, sailed into the second round with a straight set win over Serb Dusan Lajovic.Sania Mirza, Leander Paes, Rohan Bopanna and other Indian players will begin their Doubles campaigns tomorrow.
