In an unprecedented move, the defence service chiefs have been summoned for questioning by Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, PAC, today in connection with alleged irregularities in the Canteen stores supplies. AIR correspondent reports while the Army and the Air Force Chiefs will themselves be present before the PAC, the Navy would be represented by Vice Chief D K Deewan, as Chief Nirmal Verma is in Indonesia on a pre-scheduled visit. The Comptroller and Auditor General, CAG, had said in a 2009 report that the Canteen stores department’s procurement and distribution of dry rations was faulty. Meanwhile, the Army Chief had made it clear on Monday that he will be following the directives of the Defence Ministry in this respect and appear before the PAC. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of an NCC function in New Delhi on Tuesday, the IAF Chief P.V.Naik said, every one is responsible to Parliament and no body is exempt from it. Air Chief Marshal, however, said the armed forces have decided to stick to their stand that their Unit Run Canteens are beyond the purview of the PAC. The Defence Ministry, which received the communication from PAC had advised the service chiefs to appear before the panel to underline the committee's immense significance. Usually the Defence Secretary attends meetings of the Parliamentary Committees along with Vice Chiefs of the Services.
