Defence Minister recommends court martial against Lt. Gen Awadhesh in Sukna land case

The Defence Minister, Mr. A K Antony has recommended Court Martial against Lt Gen Awadhesh Prakash in the Sukna land case. A defence ministry spokesman told our correspondent that the minister has sent an advisory to army chief General Deepak Kapoor in this connection. An internal investigation by the army found that General Prakash influenced officers to permit a real estate developer to acquire 71 acres of land next top Army Headquarters in Siliguri in West Bengal.<br/><br/>The army had earlier told the government that this land could not be sold to any commercial developer for security reasons. According to reports, army's internal inquiry had said that General Awadhesh Prakash should be sacked for allegedly becoming a facilitator in promoting the business of one of his friends. Lt. General Awadhesh Prakash is the military secretary of the Army Chief and is scheduled to retire on 31st of this month. AIR correspondent reports that the internal inquiry of the army had also recommended initiation of proceedings against Lt. General. R.K. Rath, whose appointment as Deputy Chief of the Army Staff has been scrapped by the Defence Ministry. Major General P.C. Sen has also been indicted in the inquiry report.
