Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar reached Srinagar this evening to take stock of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of the militant attack on Rear Administrative Base Camp of Infantry Battalion near Army Brigade Headquarters in Uri town near Line of Control in north Kashmir's Baramulla district. <br/><br/>Seventeen soldiers were killed and more than 20 other army personnel were injured in the attack. All the four unidentified heavily armed and highly trained suicide attackers were also killed in the counter action. <br/><br/>Four AK-47 rifles and four under-barrel grenade launchers (UBGLs) were recovered from the slain militants. The sanitization and mopping operation is still going on in the area. The Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag had reached Srinagar earlier today.<br/><br/>Manohar Parrikar and Gen Dalbir Singh were briefed by the Northern Army Commander Lt Gen DS Hooda and Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen Satish Dua on the Uri attack and the operation launched to neutralise the attackers. <br/><br/>Gen Suhag earlier visited the site of the militant attack and interacted with the field commanders there. He also took stock of the security situation at army installations and camps near the Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir and the alertness of the soldiers along the Line of Control (LoC).<br/><br/>Both Parrikar and Gen Suhag later met the injured army personnel at the Army Base Hospital in BB Cantt.<br/><br/>Governor N.N. Vohra called Lt. Gen. D.S. Hooda, Northern Army Commander and Lt. Gen. Satish Dua, GOC 15 Corps, and conveyed his heartfelt sympathy on the loss of lives of soldiers. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti condemned the attack and said," the attack seems to be aimed at triggering fresh violence and creating a war-like situation in the region." She paid rich tributes to the slain soldiers and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and also prayed for early recovery of those injured in the attack.<br/><br/>A high level Security Review meeting was held at Raj Bhavan in Srinagar today. Governor N.N. Vohra and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had called the meeting to review the security situation after the Uri attack.
