All strategic roads in the North Eastern region are being developed as scheduled. The length of their network is eleven thousand six hundred and seventy two kilometers at present.
They are being built and maintained by the Border Roads Organisation. Defence Minister A.K. Antony said this during question time in the Lok Sabha today.
He said the double-laning of the 317-kilometre road between Balipara in Assam and Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh is progressing. So far, 88 kilometers of the road has been completed and works are in progress in the remaining stretches.

In reply to a question, Mr. Antony said the delays in road construction in the North Eastern States occur mainly due to the time taken in getting forest and wild life clearance and land acquisition.
Damages caused by prolonged monsoon and adverse climate conditions on high altitude as also frequent local bandhs are the other causes of delay. All the road projects in hand in the North East will be completed by 2016, the Defence Minister said.
