Declare paid news an electoral malpractice: Oppn

The leader of opposition Shushma Swaraj today asked the government to bring a bill on amendment in the Representation of the People Act to stop Paid News Syndrome. Speaking at a seminar organized by Editor's Guild Of India in New Delhi, Mrs. Swaraj said that the Election Commission was not adequately empowered to deal with the issue because The Model Code of Conduct for elections does not cover it. CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat said on the occasion that Paid news should be declared an electoral malpractice. Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said that he would discuss the issue at party level and take it up with the Government. Addressing the Seminar, Prasar Bharati chairperson Mrinal Pandey underlined the need to make a clear status on duties and responsibilities of editors in the media organizations. Mrs. Pandey said that editors are facing intense pressure by their management while performing duty, but they are heavily blamed for any fault. She said editors alone can not be held responsible for what is appearing in newspapers as they cannot check each and every edition published from different places. AIR correspondent reports that the issue of Paid News was also raised in the parliament recently.
