Government says a decision on decontrolling of sugar will be taken after consultation with all stakeholders. Union Minister for Food and Agriculture, Sharad Pawar said in New Delhi today that the government is seriously considering the proposal to decontrol the sugar industry but the decision can be taken only after proper discussions with State governments and Industry bodies. He also announced reduction in levy sugar obligation from the present 20 percent to 10 percent. Levy sugar is the amount of sugar that mills have to contribute for supply through ration shops. He said levy sugar rate will also be increased to 17 rupee 50 paise per kilo Gram from the current 13 rupees 50 paise. He said the sugar production will be 25 million tonnes sugar production this year owing to good monsoon.
