In Karnataka, with two more deaths reported on Friday, the number of deaths in the Beggars colony in Bangaluru has risen to 22. AIR correspondent reports that since the last three days, deaths are occurring in the colony and about 38 inmates are admitted to the hospital for treatment. The State Home Minister V S Acharya and some of his Cabinet collegues, the leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah, Human Rights Commission Chairman S R Naik visited the colony today. There were more than 2500 inmates in the Colony. AIR Correspondent reports, the deaths in the beggars colony since Wednesday has alarmed the inmates with many running away from the premises. The incident has raised many questions about the state of affairs in the beggars colony, may it be about the food, hygiene or the living conditions. The leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah who visited the Colony sought the resignation of Social Welfare Minister D Sudhakar and demanded an enquiry by a Judicial Magistrate. KPCC president R V Deshpande also accused the state of neglecting the beggars’ rehabilitation centre and charged that the money meant for the Colony was siphoned off by vested interests. The Home Minister Dr. V S Acharya however defended the Government saying that the deaths are due to age related causes. He said the infrastructure in the colony is adequate, however reforms will be brought about to improve the situation. The Government has already constituted a Committee of enquiry under the Social Welfare Commissioner to enquire into causes that led to series of deaths.
