More than 36 hours after the powerful earthquake that hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra, rescue workers are still assessing the scale of the disaster. Aid is starting to get through the worst affected city of Padang, but power and phone lines are down and there is little contact with other areas hit by the quake. The United Nations humanitarian Chief, John Holms said, the number of casualties is rising steadily. He said, the latest figures suggest the death toll has already risen to 1,100 and it is feared this number will rise as more information becomes available. He said, relief operation has been hampered by very heavy rainfall.
