Death toll revises to 6 in Nepal earthquake

In Nepal, the death toll on Sunday’s quake has been revised to six. According to the Home Ministry Spokesman, one death was reported on Monday in Sankhuwasabha .This is in addition to the three that were killed in the collapse of the wall in Kathmandu and two in a house collapse in the Eastern town of Dharan .He said that there were twenty-four seriously injured and seventy-seven received minor injuries across the country. While one hundred and fifty-three houses were completely damaged, one hundred and twenty-four houses were partially destroyed. Most of the destruction has been in the eastern districts bordering Sikkim.Nepal was spared major loss of lives unlike in 1988 when more than seven hundred lost their lives. The eastern bordering districts of Taplejung and Panchtari suffered the most damaged in the number of houses and buildings damaged but no loss of lives have been reported.While unofficial reports put the death toll at nine, official sources said six lives have been lost due to the quake. In a report jointly published by the United Nations and the Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery in 2004, Nepal was ranked as the 11th most earthquake-prone country in the world. In terms of human casualty risk, Kathmandu is billed as one of the most risk-prone area in the world.
